Saatva Solaire Mattress Firmness and Feel

When reviewing mattresses, we always pay close attention to firmness levels and feel. Let’s dive deeper into this unique adjustable mattress.

How Firm is the Saatva Solaire?

Given that people can adjust the firmness on the Solaire, I can’t really give one firmness assessment for the mattress. However, I can speak to the range. At its softest, the Solaire felt like a 5.5/10 to me. At its firmest, the Solaire felt like an 8/10. In the end, I saw about a 3-point range of firmness.

Choose The 1–20 Range If: Choose The 21–39 Range If: Choose The 40–50 Range If: – You are a lightweight sleeper

– You are a side sleeper who needs extra pressure relief

– You are a heavier side sleeper

– You are an average weight back sleeper

– You are a heavier back sleeper

– You are a stomach sleeper

Sleeping On The Saatva Solaire

Because of its air bed design, I was able to adjust the firmness to fit my sleeping position. This was my experience:

While sleeping on my back, I took the mattress down to about 40/50. My hips sunk into the top comfort layer, but then I felt the support of the air chambers below that. With this firmness, it is a good mattress for back sleepers.

Moving to my side, I adjusted the mattress to the 15/ or 20/50 range. Even at this very soft setting, I still felt some firmness on my shoulders and hips. While I think lighter people should feel nice pressure relief when side sleeping, heavier people might feel some pressure.

When I slept on my stomach, I set the Solaire to its firmest setting. I didn’t feel my hips sink, and the mattress properly supported me overall. It should indeed be a good mattress for stomach sleepers.

What Does the Saatva Solaire Feel Like?

The mattress has a pillow-top feel with a bit of memory foam softness beneath that. There is also some latex in the top few layers, which adds a bit of bounce, so it shouldn’t be difficult to move around on the mattress or switch positions at night.

Average-Weight Sleepers: 130 lb–230 lb

Because you can adjust the Saatva Solaire’s firmness level, average weight sleepers should feel comfortable in all sleeping positions. In the 40–50 firmness range, back sleepers should feel well supported. While side sleeping, most average weight sleepers will prefer a firmness range between 25 and 30. This should provide ample pressure relief for shoulders and hips.

While stomach sleeping, average weight sleepers will probably prefer the firmest setting. This will prevent hips from sinking too far into the mattress, and it will help keep the body in alignment.

Heavyweight Sleepers: Over 230 lb

While back sleeping, heavyweight sleepers should have no trouble finding a supportive firmness level. The Saatva Solaire may not be the best fit for heavier side sleepers, though. At its softest setting, heavier people may still feel some pressure on their shoulders and hips. If this is your preferred sleeping position, you may want to take a look at some of the best mattresses for heavy people. On the firmest setting, heavier back sleepers should feel a good amount of support under their hips.

Lightweight Sleepers: Under 130 lb

The Saatva Solaire is an excellent choice for lightweight sleepers. With the correct firmness setting, people in this weight category should feel well supported and comfortable. Lightweight people will likely prefer a medium setting when back sleeping and a softer setting while side sleeping. When sleeping on their stomachs, lightweight people will prefer a firm setting.

Saatva Solaire Mattress Construction

Let’s peel back the covers and take a look inside the Saatva Solaire. Here’s what this mattress is made of:

Cover

The Solaire’s cover is 100% cotton and tufted with comfort foam to provide added softness and pressure relief.

Comfort Layers

The next layer is 2” of a gel-infused memory foam, which provides great pressure relief and body contouring.

Then there is 1” of Talalay latex, which is a durable material that will also give the mattress some bounce and prevent sleepers from sinking too far into the mattress. This isn’t a latex mattress per se, but this material will affect the overall feel.

This is followed by a thin moisture barrier.

Support Layers

Next, there are the vulcanized air chambers, which are surrounded by a foam encasement. The air chamber is made of vulcanized rubber, which is meant to fight air leakage and ensure the air chambers last for a good amount of time. On many other adjustable mattresses, the air inflator sits outside of the bed. But on the Saatva Solaire, the air inflator is built into the front of the mattress.

Then there is a 1” foam, 5-zoned support layer for additional support.

Mattress Height

The Saatva Solaire is 13″ tall – a little bit taller than the average mattress.

Saatva Solaire Mattress Performance

We know about the Solaire’s impressive features and construction, but how well does it perform overall? Keep reading to learn more about its cooling features, motion transfer, edge support, durability, and more.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

The Saatva Solaire has many features that are designed to keep people sleeping cool.  The memory foam is gel-infused, and the Talalay latex is naturally cooling. In addition, the latex is ventilated to allow for airflow. If you especially struggle with sleeping hot at night, it may not hit all of the right marks for you. Instead, take a look at the best cooling mattresses.

Motion Transfer

If people sleep with a partner, they will want to know how their mattress handles motion transfer. Will the Solaire isolate their partner’s movements on their side of the bed, or will they be disturbed?

To test out the Solaire, I placed a glass of water on the mattress and pressed into the surrounding area, and the water was only barely disturbed.

The Solaire features a 2″ layer of memory foam in its comfort layer. This material is great at cutting down on motion transfer. In addition the mattress is split so that each partner has their own adjustable air chamber. This split design should further decrease the motion that transfers across the mattress.

Overall, the Solaire is one of the best mattresses for couples.

Edge Support

If someone sleeps with a partner, they will want to know how much of the mattress they can utilize. Can they sit or sleep near the edge securely, or will they feel like they’re going to roll off?

The edge support will, of course, depend on which firmness people choose. That said, there is a foam encasement that surrounds the air chambers and adds a base level of edge support.

I adjusted the mattress to its firmest setting and sat near the edge. I felt very secure while sitting down and did not feel like I was going to fall forward. When I laid down near the edge, I did not feel like I was going to roll off or be ejected from the bed.

In the end, the Solaire has very solid edge support that sleepers will really enjoy.

Durability

The Saatva Solaire is made with high-quality materials, so it should have a long lifespan. We expect this mattress to last at least 10 years.

Off-Gassing

When opening a new mattress, it’s common to notice a slight chemical smell. But because the Saatva Solaire is made with eco-friendly materials, there was very little off-gassing.

Noise

When testing the Saatva Solaire, we did not notice any significant noise. Overall, this should be a very quiet mattress.

Sex

Couples looking for a good mattress for sex typically want something that’s responsive and easy to move around on. Because the Saatva Solaire has a bouncy feel, this is a great mattress for getting intimate.

Saatva Solaire Vs. Sleep Number

The Saatva Solaire and Sleep Number mattresses are both adjustable air beds. Sleep Number, however, makes seven different models in this category. Additionally, all Sleep Number beds have SleepIQ technology that monitors sleep quality throughout the night. Both beds offer plenty of support and pressure relief, so they’re good options for a variety of different sleepers.

Because of their advanced features, many Sleep Number beds can cost more than the Saatva Solaire. Those who tend to sleep hot at night will want to choose one of Sleep Number’s Innovation Series beds.

Saatva Solaire Vs. Helix Midnight

The biggest difference between the Saatva Solaire and Helix Midnight is construction. The Solaire is an adjustable air mattress, and the Helix Midnight is a hybrid mattress made with coils and foam.

Though it doesn’t allow sleepers to personalize its firmness level with a push of a button, the Helix Midnight does offer many customization options. It’s available in a wide range of firmness levels, and customers can choose to add more cooling features and purchase a plush pillow-top.

The Helix is a better option for those on a budget. The Saatva Solaire costs more money, but it’s also a higher-end option.

Who Should Get The Saatva Solaire?

  • Those who want an adjustable air mattress
  • Those who want a higher-end mattress
