Why You Should Install Aluminium sliding windows

Aluminium windows are the overwhelming system of choice for high quality fenestration. Over the years, Aluminium sliding windows and doors technology has improved significantly. Locking systems have become more durable with multi-point locking, while weather and soundproofing have also been improved to keep out noise and the elements.

Aluminium sliding windows are ideal for homes and offices. They are durable, cost competitive, lightweight and can withstand the harsh tropical climate. When paired with appropriate glass, it also improves the energy efficiency of your building. Aluminium is also the architectural material of choice for its aesthetics and design flexibility.

Read on to explore more reasons why you should choose aluminium windows for your next project.

1. Less Frames, Better Views

For homeowners looking to get the most out of scenic views and natural light without sacrificing ventilation, sliding windows are a perfect option. Sliding windows allow you to have a larger sash size, and therefore fewer frames. Casement windows, which swing in or outward, may be size limited due to loading capacity of the window hardware.

Under Singapore’s Building & Construction Authority (BCA) regulations, sliding windows should have a maximum width of 1200mm, compared with 700mm for casement windows. I.e. Sliding windows may have fewer intermediate sections for the same opening size. Sliding windows and doors are also perfect for large openings, allowing easy access to your balcony or patio.

2. Lightweight and Resistant to Corrosion

The specific weight of aluminium is just 2.7 g/cm3, about a third of steel, making it one of the lightest industrial metals  and ideal for window and door frames.

Aluminium's resistance to corrosion also means it forms a layer of aluminium oxide as soon as it comes into contact with air, even after the original coating wears off. This rust-free property makes maintaining aluminium windows much easier and longer lasting.

Unlike timber, steel or uPVC  frames, aluminium window frames will not swell, crack, split, or warp after many years of exposure to harsh weather conditions.

3. Performance under high wind conditions

Sliding windows also have one lesser known advantage. With sliding windows, you can leave a small opening for fresh air and not have to worry about strong winds and rain blowing your window completely open.

This is especially relevant for homes on high floors or which experience strong winds. Casement windows left slightly ajar can be blown wide open under certain conditions, allowing rain to enter. Sliding windows are not prone to this due to their different opening mechanism.

4. Improved Aesthetics

Auminium sliding windows can be easily customised to a wide range of colours and finishes, such as powder coating or anodised finishes. You can even have an aluminium window in wood-grain finish to simulate a natural look!

5. Easy to Maintain

Windows tend to accumulate dirt every few months, especially if you live near major roads or construction sites. Maintaining and cleaning aluminium sliding windows is much easier and safer than with outward-opening casement windows. With the right cleaning equipment, most parts of the window glass exterior can be accessed without having a risk of a dangerous fall.

Aluminium sliding windows and the glass should never be scrubbed with abrasive materials or metal brushes, as this can damage their finish. To avoid accidental damage and scratches, the cloth used for glass should also not be used for cleaning other furnishings.

Unlike materials like uPVC and wood, all aluminium frames are 100% recyclable and reusable. In other words, using aluminium sliding windows would mean doing your part to protect the environment.
