DAYTONA BEACH — Daytona Lagoon waterpark and family entertainment center will celebrate the official grand opening of two new water slides with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10 a.m. Friday featuring Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood among the first riders.

Daytona Lagoon, at 601 Earl St., is officially opening "Kraken’s Revenge," a 50-foot high four-lane slide that takes riders through a high-speed skylight tunnel, as well as the "Shaka Halfpipe," a float ride built on a pendulum-style, 50-foot tall half-pipe design.

Both rides have been operating for guests for several weeks in a soft opening, said Tyler Currie, the park’s general manager. Daytona Lagoon has invested nearly $1.5 million on the waterslides and other improvements, Currie said.

At Friday’s event, Chitwood will be the ceremonial first rider on the Shaka Halfpipe, while radio hosts from 103.3 FM WVYB and 95.7 FM WHOG will race against each other on Kraken’s Revenge. Nancy Keefer, president and CEO of Daytona Beach Regional Chamber of Commerce will speak about the park’s importance to the area and Daytona Tortugas’ mascots Shelldon and Shelly also will be on hand.

Following the media event, the first 100 guests to enter the park during its regular operation hours will receive a free Daytona Lagoon drawstring bag with an arcade card and commemorative Grand Opening stickers. The park will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $15.99. Visit daytonalagoon.com for details.
