We Have Every Type of Hydraulic Hose Needed

It is our business to know the applications of all hydraulic hose types. As you already know, hose type and flexibility is essential for proper positioning and operation. There are many types of hydraulic hoses, and our team makes it easier for your business to get back to full operation whenever a hydraulic hose needs replacement. Our mobile fleet technicians are equipped to service customers with quality service.

Understanding the Hydraulic Hose

To better understand the significance of these simple looking but strategically designed and tested hoses, Hydraulics & Pneumatics offers a detailed write-up. “Engineering Essentials: Types of Hydraulic Hose” (2012, January 1) is a good reference. As reported, hydraulic hoses are basically made up of three different parts: “an inner tube that carries the fluid, a reinforcement layer, and a protective outer layer.”

  • The inner tube should be flexible, and it must be compatible with the hydraulic fluid that will be flowing through it.
  • The reinforcement layer is made up of “one or more sheaths of braided wire, spiral-wound wire, or textile yarn.”
  • The outer layer protects the inside two layers, and it is resistant to the surrounding environmental conditions such as “weather, oil and/or abrasion.”

Hydraulic hoses cannot last forever, and SAE outlines those damaging effects that can shorten the lifespan of hydraulic hoses.

  • Not understanding the specified, minimum bend radius of a hose that is not appropriate to use in tight space constraints.
  • Not using proper hose length and allowing the hose to “twist, pull, kink, crush, or abrade.”
  • Improper operation of the hydraulic system by not reaching or exceeding appropriate temperature range.
  • Allowing pressure surges that exceed the maximum operating pressure.
  • Using incompatible fittings and/or assembly equipment.

Follow the STAMPED Rule of Thumb to Determine Hydraulic Hose Selection

When you are first selecting a hydraulic hose and coupling system, following the recommended seven-stop process known as STAMPED helps. Size, temperature, application, materials, pressure, ends, and delivery should all be considered for the best operational success. The technicians at Custom Hose Tech will help you cover each recommended step. The DELIVERY step is important as reported in the above-cited article.

Understanding the Hydraulic Hose Types

The SAE J517 is an established guideline that has been followed for decades for a series of hydraulic hose types identified to be 100R1 through 100R12 plus the later revised, constant-pressure hoses 100R13 through 100R19. Manufacturers have been following these standards to adhere to design, construction, and pressure ratings with the latest revised edition posted in October 2018. As you will learn, some hose types have become obsolete due to little or no demand.

Currently, the more commonly used hydraulic hose types are: 100R1 • 100R2 • 100R4 • 100R5 • 100R7 • 100R8 • 100R12 • 100R13 • 100R14 • 100R15 • 100R16 • 100R17 • 100R18. These hoses are each used with certain fluid types with certain temperature ranges and specified pressure ranges as you will see in the Hydraulics & Pneumatics’ article chart.

Additional Industry Standards for Hydraulic Hoses

SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) is not the only organization that sets standards for hydraulic hoses. Other organizations also provide hydraulic hose standards.

  • EN (European Norm) – EN 856
  • DIN (Deutsche Institute fur Normung)
  • ISO (International Standards Organization)*

*International Organization for Standardization

The ISO is another organization that promotes industrial and commercial standards across the globe. As you will find in a Parker-Hannifin‘s article, hydraulic system designers are now using the ISO specifications. The “ISO Standard 18752 takes a different approach centered around the design practices of users who typically design hydraulic systems based on performance and pressure requirements.”

In place of SAE J517 types, “the ISO 18752 classifies hydraulic hoses according to their resistance to impulse pressure in four grades: A, B, C, and D.” Within each grade, types are determined based on “outside diameter of the hose into standard types (AS, BS, CS) or compact types (AC, BC, CC, DC).” Each type is further defined by temperature, impulse pressure and the minimum number of cycles. Two identifying differences between the compact types and standard types is the outside diameter (O.D.) and bend radius with the compact types having “smaller O.D. and bend radius.”

With strict testing guidelines, hoses are rated for specific applications based on ISO 18572 Performance Definitions. The welcomed benefit is for the end users and engineers to have the ability to better select the best hose for different pieces of equipment or machinery.
