The SAE J517 is an established guideline that has been followed for decades for a series of hydraulic hose types identified to be 100R1 through 100R12 plus the later revised, constant-pressure hoses 100R13 through 100R19. Manufacturers have been following these standards to adhere to design, construction, and pressure ratings with the latest revised edition posted in October 2018. As you will learn, some hose types have become obsolete due to little or no demand.
Currently, the more commonly used hydraulic hose types are: 100R1 • 100R2 • 100R4 • 100R5 • 100R7 • 100R8 • 100R12 • 100R13 • 100R14 • 100R15 • 100R16 • 100R17 • 100R18. These hoses are each used with certain fluid types with certain temperature ranges and specified pressure ranges as you will see in the Hydraulics & Pneumatics’ article chart.
SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) is not the only organization that sets standards for hydraulic hoses. Other organizations also provide hydraulic hose standards.
The ISO is another organization that promotes industrial and commercial standards across the globe. As you will find in a Parker-Hannifin‘s article, hydraulic system designers are now using the ISO specifications. The “ISO Standard 18752 takes a different approach centered around the design practices of users who typically design hydraulic systems based on performance and pressure requirements.”
In place of SAE J517 types, “the ISO 18752 classifies hydraulic hoses according to their resistance to impulse pressure in four grades: A, B, C, and D.” Within each grade, types are determined based on “outside diameter of the hose into standard types (AS, BS, CS) or compact types (AC, BC, CC, DC).” Each type is further defined by temperature, impulse pressure and the minimum number of cycles. Two identifying differences between the compact types and standard types is the outside diameter (O.D.) and bend radius with the compact types having “smaller O.D. and bend radius.”
With strict testing guidelines, hoses are rated for specific applications based on ISO 18572 Performance Definitions. The welcomed benefit is for the end users and engineers to have the ability to better select the best hose for different pieces of equipment or machinery.
