What is the difference between MEWP Scissor Lift and MEWP Boom lift?

07 Oct.,2023

Projects that involve hard to reach places, often require additional equipment for the purpose of health and safety. If you’ve got an upcoming construction project that requires an aerial lift, then it’s best to know which one would be most suitable to use.

In our latest blog post we compare the difference between a MEWP scissor lift and a Boom Lift, and the pros and cons of each machine.

WHAT IS A MEWP SCISSOR LIFT?

For any projects not located on ground level, operators will require a boost. A MEWP Scissor lift is one of the main types of equipment that could be used for the task at hand.

As the name suggests, a scissor lift is a large aerial platform supported by multiple crisscrossed supports.

Due to the design structure of a scissor lift this type of elevated platform can only operate vertically. It is most commonly used in factories, warehouses that store a lot of stock, loading docks, and even in the construction industry on particular projects.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING A SCISSOR LIFT?

So, what are the advantages of using a scissor lift over other machines we hear you ask?

Larger work platforms

If you’re working at a height it can be extremely difficult to complete the job if the platform isn’t big enough to lift you, as well as all the required tools.

Can be transported easily

Are you using a scissor lift in various places on a construction site, or for different tasks? Scissor lifts can be moved around easily and safely to use as and where required. If you’re required to work from height, a scissor lift can be placed and extended quickly. They also do not take up a lot of space!

Affordable

Scissor lifts are much simpler machines to use than others on the market, and they work effectively when it comes to basic lifting tasks. They also work out very affordable!

Now, let’s move onto the other popular type of access equipment, a boom lift.

WHAT IS A MEWP BOOM LIFT?

A boom lift is another type of aerial lift however it is controlled by hydraulics instead. It is also one of the highest reaching elevated work platforms currently on the market. A boom lift will provide the user with much more flexibility in comparison to a scissor lift.

When it comes to selecting a boom lift there are two options available. Choose between:

A telescopic boom lift – This particular design features a single hinged arm that can extend and stretch over distance.

An articulating boom lift – This boom lift is made up of multiple arms that are connected via connectors to provide the user with additional reach.

A boom lift is typically used for the following tasks:

  • Putting up scaffolding

  • Fruit picking on farms

  • Decorating including painting high walls and ceilings

  • Lighting work

  • Hanging signs (exterior and interior)

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING A BOOM LIFT?

Similar to scissor lifts, boom lifts are also fantastic for lifting tasks, but why would you favour a boom lift over a scissor lift?

Used indoor and outdoor

Boom lifts offer flexibility when it comes to a range of jobs, and can be safely used in interior and exterior workplaces.

Flexibility

As the boom lift is able to move horizontally and vertically, it can reach locations and move easily around objects and building structures. Due to the structure of the arms and connectors it can be angled in various directions to access areas safely.

A combination of strength, stability and reach make boom lifts a favoured choice of lifting equipment within multiple industries. The next thing to cover is training, as you’re not able to just use one without proper training.
