During the process of coffee production, all kinds of aromas naturally develop. These aromas provide a certain smell and taste and therefore it is important to preserve them. Because of this, the coffee packaging is very important, as it must ensure that the aromas are preserved. If oxygen enters the coffee, the aromas will decrease and so will the quality of the smell and taste. This is why it is extremely important that the packaging of coffee is airtight.

The leak detection solutions are testing your products in a non-destructive way, which means that your coffee stays undamaged and don’t have to be destroyed after testing. When no leak is found, your product can put back into the production line. This way, big savings are made on testing costs, products are less likely to be returned later in the chain, production waste is reduced, water in the production environment eliminates and accurate and traceable measurement results are made.

TYPES OF COFFEE PACKAGING

Coffee is packed in flexible, rigid and vacuum packaging. Sustainable and eco-friendly packaging is also becoming increasingly popular in this industry. We use the vacuum decay method for testing flexible and rigid packaging. Examples of the different types of packaging are:

• Flexible packaging: Coffee pads, small pouches of instant coffee or coffee beans, for example, are packed in flexible coffee packaging. Some flexible pouches with coffee beans inside have a filter on them, but it is still important that the rest of the pouch is leak tight.
• Rigid packaging: Rigid coffee packaging are coffee capsules or coffee cups. Nowadays, these are also made of different materials, such as aluminum, plastic and even cardboard. But they are all still dimensionally rigid packaging. A leak in a coffee cup makes the coffee unusable.
• Vacuum packaging: Vacuum coffee packaging is a foil packaging were oxygen is fully removed and is then vacuumed. This ensures a longer lasting coffee. Vacuum coffee is often a rectangular hard container.

These different types of packaging can all be tested for leak tightness with a leak tester. Therefore different solutions of coffee packaging leak detection machines are developed.

STATIONARY LEAK TESTER

Your flexible packaging is tested in the Stationary Leak Tester. It is placed between two flexible membranes. After closing the lid, a deep vacuum is created in the test chamber. This creates a very small measuring area without damaging the packaging. With this unique measuring method, you can detect both micro leaks and large leaks without having to change any settings.

STATIONARY LEAK TESTER XS & M

Rigid packaging, such as coffee cups, are tested in the Stationary Leak Tester XS & M. A custom-made insert is created in the exact form of the packaging. With these packages, up to 16 cups can be tested at the same time; the number depends on the size of the cups. The cups are placed in the insert and between one flexible membrane. After closing the lid, a deep vacuum is created in the test chamber. This creates a very small measuring area without damaging the packaging. With this unique measuring method, you can detect both micro leaks and large leaks without having to change any settings.

VACUUM LEAK TESTER

With vacuum-packed coffee, leaks are detected with the Vacuum Leak Tester. To test a vacuum coffee packaging, the space surrounding the packaging must be as small as possible. In order to do this, a custom-made membrane is created to embrace the packaging and search for leaks. Testing different sizes or types of vacuum packaging? Just change the clock head.

IN-LINE COFFEE PACKAGING TESTING

Flexible, vacuum and rigid packaging can also be tested with an in-line leak detection machine. The only difference with a stand-alone solution, is that your packaging is testing within your production line. An in-line machine is able to detect leaks at random, fully automatically or 100%.
