Knowing when to stop using a stroller is often a decision that our toddlers make for us, usually because they scream when we try to put them in one, or like for me, your toddler starts telling you that they want to walk everywhere.

Deciding when to stop using a stroller can be a decision that we wish to draw out, because despite some of the downsides of using one (like people using it to push past you in queues, yep, that’s happened to me!) they really help when you’re doing the school run, and they’re great to store things in on days out.

However, if you think the time has come to stop using a stroller, but you’re not entirely sure if it has, then here is some information that may help you to make the decision, and once made, some stroller alternatives you may like to consider.

What age should a toddler stop using a stroller?

The American Academy of Paediatrics states that your toddler should stop using a stroller by the time they’re 3 years old.

In the UK, the NHS states that once your toddler is walking they should be active for at least 3 hours a day, and a good way for your toddler to be more active is for them to walk instead of sitting in a stroller.

However, like many things when it comes to ages, some toddlers will be ready to stop using a stroller before 3 years of age, and some will be ready after 3 years of age.

You know your toddler the best, so do what is right for your toddler and your family.

When to stop using a stroller

If you think your toddler is ready to stop using a stroller, here are some of the reasons why some mums stop using one, which may help you decide if the time is right for you to stop using one as well.

Toddlers need to be active

Toddlers need to be active, and according to the NHS guidelines above, they need to be active for 3 hours a day.

This can include playing outside, doing tasks around the house, dancing, and going for a walk.

Your stroller has become an inconvenience

This is how I knew that it may be time to stop using a stroller, my toddler didn’t want to be in it anymore, and I was using it solely to store things.

It had become an inconvenience as I was pushing around an empty stroller, whilst trying to hold my toddler’s hand.

Your toddler is able to respond to instructions

If your toddler is able to respond to instructions like holding your hand, coming back, being careful, or waiting, then it may be time to stop using a stroller and letting them walk with you instead.

Your toddler has become interested in the world around them

If your toddler wants to explore, look at, and touch things, it’s easier for them to do so when they’re out of a stroller.
