The Mechanical Fabrication Department:

  • Provides manufacturing services to fabricate, assemble and process devices for SLAC and other related institutions.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs accelerator mechanical and vacuum systems.
  • Develops manufacturing processes unique to SLAC's mission.
  • Provides collaborative manufacturing services where limited product definition exists for urgent projects provide quick turn around manufacturing.
  • Provides manufacturing services for toxic or radioactive materials.

MFD personnel will carry out this mission with respect for each other, with the highest priority placed on their safety and the safety of others, with a minimum impact on the environment, with productive use of the resources provided, in compliance with regulations while enjoying what we do.

 

Production staff of 100-plus technically skilled employees working two shifts. Our fabricating and assembly capabilities enable us to provide parts made-to-order or on a customer prescribed Just-in-Time (JIT) delivery schedule.

(3) CNC Lasers – From 4kW CO2 up to 9kW Fiber. Mild steel up to 1inch thick, stainless steel up to 0.500” thick and aluminum up to 0.500” thick can be cut as well as many non-ferrous metals. All lasers have automated load and unload with material storage towers

(6) CNC Punching Centers – Amada and Trumpf. Most equipped with Auto Load/Unload and material storage towers. Capable of punching up to 60” wide by 120” long

(1) Amada shear – (up to .250” thick x 122” long)

(1) RAS panel bender – up to 14-gauge capacity with 10ft bend length

(12)Press brakes (up to 220 tons x 168”) Trumpf, LVD, Amada, Cincinnati, Pullmax, all with CNC controls and back gauges.

(1) Haeger auto-feed insertion press

We also have a variety of saws, drill presses, and manual fabricating equipment to augment our capabilities.
