What are the best adhesive glue sprays to use?

There are many different types of spray glue for different types of products. One type of glue may not be suited for every type of project that you want to undertake. General purpose glues should be used for more arts and crafts style projects. Whereas high grade professional glue sprays should be used for heavy duty jobs because of their superior bonding strength.

Both Helmar Spray glue and Design Master Spray glue are well-respected glue sprays. The benefits of these specially formulated spray glues are that they dry clear and do not yellow, are acid free, do not bleed or wrinkle, they allow for multi-coats, and can be used on many surfaces and materials.

What do I need to consider when using a spray can adhesive?

There are a few things to consider before you start using your spray adhesive glue. These sprays are made to be quick and easy to use but are also fast drying. So if you have never used them before you should consider the below questions before you begin your project.

What surface am I going to spray on?

Before you start using your spray adhesive glue, you need to clean the surface that you wish to spray. Before use, your surface should be cleared of any oil, wax, paint, or dirt.

You should also consider how porous your materials are and if your pieces will glue together with ease, or if they will require a brace to hold them together whilst the glue dries. Sponges, wood, rubber, and some rocks are usually very porous materials and can be glued to surfaces without the need of a brace. However, marble, glass, and some plastics are not porous and most likely will require a brace to hold the objects in place whilst the glue sets.

What is the drying speed of my glue?

Different spray adhesives are set to dry at different speeds. To know the exact drying speed of your glue you should consult the product instructions on the can label.

Most spray glues will become tacky 30 seconds after application. During the first minute, it is usually safe to adjust your pieces slightly before they set into place. After this timeframe, if you attempt to move pieces you may risk damaging your materials. To achieve maximum bond strength, leave your glued pieces to dry undisturbed overnight before continued use.

How strong is the glue?

There are different types of adhesive glues on the market that provide different levels of strength for different projects. General purpose glues, such as Helmar Spray Glue, should be used for more arts and crafts style projects. Whereas high grade professional glue sprays, like Design Master Spray Glue, should be used for more heavy-duty jobs because of their superior bonding strength.

Before you start your project, you should consider, how heavy or load-bearing is the item you are gluing and how often it will be used. If it is a display object that will not be disturbed or take on any weight after being set, then a general-purpose glue should be used for your project. If your project is more mechanical and will required repeated use or pressure to be placed on it after it is set, then a high-grade professional glue spray should be used.

Step-by-step tips on how to use spray adhesive glue

With all spray glues, you should follow the manufacturer’s instructions as each style of glue may require different application methods.

Prepare

  • Prepare your spraying area well in advance to minimise the clean-up of overspray. To protect your area, cover your workstation with a drop sheet or cardboard.
  • Work in a well-ventilated area that is away from high winds.
  • For safety purposes, always wear a mask to avoid inhaling any fumes, and wear latex or nitrile gloves (not PVC, nylon, or cotton).

Apply

  • Shake the can well before you start spraying the product.
  • Ensure the surfaces to be bonded are free of any residue such as oil, dust, wax, or paint.
  • Always spray a small test area if you have not used the product before and are unsure of how to use it.
  • Spray evenly and no closer than 25cm away from the area you are spraying.
  • Allow the glue to become tacky for about 30 seconds before you bond your materials.
  • During the first minute, it is usually safe to adjust your pieces slightly before they set into place.
  • After they are positioned correctly, press the bonding surfaces together, and maintain pressure for at least 2 minutes.
  • The bonding should be secure in a few minutes.
  • Allow the glue to dry for at least 2 hours or leave overnight for maximum bond strength.

Clean

  • After use, invert the can and spray quickly to clear the spray nozzle.
  • Clean up any excess glue or build-up around the nozzle with water or mineral spirits if required. Wipe thoroughly with a dry cloth and replace the cap.
  • When storing your spray can do not store it in a hot or humid place, but in a dry area that is kept at room temperature.
