Epliate at the right time! Epilating two or three days post shaving is easier on the skin and is less painful than epilating two or three weeks post shaving.

Exfoliate - Exfoliating before epilation helps to loosen any ingrown hairs and remove dead skin cells to prep the skin for a better result.

Have a bath - Epilating wet skin generally works better and is more painless than epilating dry skin. The skin is also more relaxed and desensitised when it has been bathed in warm water first. If you’re epilating wet, do so in the bath under the water rather than the shower. It’s just easier that way! Start using the epilator only after you’ve been relaxing in the warm water for about 5 minutes then, with your leg and epilator fully submerged, start the process.

If you are epilating dry, your skin should be oil-free and entirely dry to prevent the epilator from just glossing over hairs instead of plucking them. You can use talcum powder to remove oils from the skin.

Treat sensitive skin differently - Use a Braun Silk-epil 7 Wet & Dry epilator if you have especially sensitive skin. This model can be used underwater, giving you the gentlest epilation possible! (Always check the specifications of your model before use - not all Braun epilators can be used under running water)

Having a hard time getting that one hair? Brush across your skin against the direction of the hair growth before epilating. This will lift the shorter hairs and give the epilator a better grip. You should always epilate against the direction of hair growth.

Avoid epilation just before or during your period - If you're looking to avoid as much pain as possible, avoid epilating just before or during your period, as during this time your hormones are working double time and your skin will be more sensitive and painful.

Rinse before lotion - Rather than slathering on cold lotion right after epilating, rinse your skin under cold water to close the pores and cool the skin. Giving your skin and pores some time to recover will prevent any irritations or stinging that lotion on opened pores might cause.

How to epilate: Step-by-step epilating guide

Its all in the prep. As every beauty guru knows looking effortlessly gorgeous requires a little forward-planning. So before we show you how to epilate, check what to do earlier:

1. Timing is everything. Epilate the night before you bust out your look-at-my-silky-legs LBD or date outfit. This gives 24 hours for any irritation to reduce.

Evenings are the best time for an epilation rendez-vous. You're more relaxed, any minor bumps will be gone by the morning and you'll wake up with the sexiest, smoothest skin ever!

2. Exfoliation is the golden word. Take a warm shower, relax and exfoliate your skin to avoid those dreaded in-grown hairs. Either use an exfoliating scrub or mitt or rub down skin with a dry towel. Alternatively Braun Silk-épil 9 SkinSpa has an innovative exfoliating brush that gives 4 times better exfoliation that a manual scrub.
