Clearance Sensing Vs. Stroke Sensing Automatic Slack Adjusters

03 Jul.,2023

Automatic Slack Adjusters have become a standard part on heavy-duty truck vehicles. In 1994, it became required by the U.S. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard to have them on your vehicles. But that doesn’t mean all slack adjusters are made equal. There are two significant types of automatic slack adjusters, Stroke Sensing, and Clearance Sensing, and it’s important to know which one is which.

What’s The Difference?

The difference is in the measurement. A slack adjuster on the surface is just a measuring tool that tells you how much give there is between the push of the brake pedal and where the brakes are applied. But there are two places that you can measure the effectiveness of a brake, the stroke of the brake being applied by the driver, or the clearance between the brake pad and the drum after the brake has been applied.

Yes, I said two different things. And yes, one is better than the other. Imagine that we’re in a football game, and you’re less than a yard from the first down marker. The referee wants to measure, but instead of measuring from where the ball is spotted to the goal line, they measure from the back of the end zone to where the ball is spotted.

You’d get the same result, but which measurement do you trust more? The shortest and most direct. Since clearance sensing types adjust the brakes from the difference in space from the pad to the drum, brakes never over-adjust due to heavy start and stop applications.

Haldex Clearance Sensing Automatic Brake Adjusters

Clearance Sensing is obviously the way to go when choosing an automatic slack adjuster, but which brand are you going to get it from? Well a good place to start would be Haldex, the first engineer of the clearance-sensing ABA.

The goal was to create a slack adjuster that accounts for any type of slack adjustment, not just wear and tear. The clearance-sensing slack adjuster adjusts when it matters, whether the driver brakes quickly or experiences a lot of starts and stops. Haldex brings Clearance Sensing Adjusters that come with a history of innovation, making them a solid choice.

S-ABA

The S-ABA expands on all the benefits that Haldex’s original clearance sensing adjuster, but with seamless installation. Most slack adjusters have a fixed control arm position, while the S-ABA automatically self-adjusts no matter the control arm position. This way you don’t have to waste time with lengthy installations. Peep the video below if you don’t believe us.
