Plant Saucers: Plastic vs. Ceramic Pros & Cons (Demo)

20 Jun.,2023

Practically every plant needs drainage, but how do you protect your home from the extra water? Plant saucers help catch extra water and prevent damage to your floors, furniture, window sills, and more. There are many different types of planter saucers, and many people wonder whether it’s better to choose plastic or ceramic. There are pros and cons to each.

Ceramic or Plastic Plant Saucers?

So, do you choose ceramic or plastic saucers for your plants? A lot of this will come down to your watering habits, types of plants you have, and more.

Plastic plant saucers offer a few great advantages that ceramic ones don’t. First, they’re durable and long-lasting. Plastic can stand up to a lot of abuse, which makes them perfect for homes with pets, children, or even some clumsy adults.

Ceramic versions, whether glazed or terra cotta, are much more fragile than heavy-duty plastic plant saucers. While they can last a long time, they’re more prone to chipping, cracking, and breaking if you drop them.

Also, ceramic saucers and planters can start to “sweat,” which means you could end up with water damage. Plastic versions are less likely to cause water damage in your home from condensation.

Ceramic planters and saucers can be difficult to clean, as they’re delicate and often porous. They also have a tendency to age over time and collect mineral deposits. By contrast, plastic is easy to clean and sanitize to remove germs that could harm your plants.

One important disadvantage to plastic saucers compared to clay options is that they aren’t porous, so they won’t suck up any water. This means you may have more water to empty from them each day compared to ceramic saucers.

How to Use Saucers

If you choose plastic saucers, then all you have to do is simply place them under the planter to catch extra water as it drains from the plant. Make sure the planter has drainage holes for plant health. Empty the extra water about 30 to 60 minutes after watering to help prevent root rot.

Another common way people use clear plant saucers is placing them inside decorative planters to turn them into cachepots. Cachepots are decorative planters that don’t have drainage holes. You’re supposed to put less decorative planters that have drainage holes inside them. However, many people find gorgeous planters that look like cachepots, but need to keep their plants in other planters to keep their plants healthy. In these cases, you can line the bottom of a planter with a plastic saucer to turn it into a cache pot.

Ceramic, on the other hand, may need some extra protection to prevent water damage. You should still place them underneath the planters to help catch extra water. However, because they’re more prone to condensation, you want to make sure there’s also something waterproof underneath the saucer. If you choose ceramic, we recommend having cork plant mats or something else underneath them to help prevent water damage.
