A baseball cap sits between you and the world. It protects you from dust and rain, and during a long day, a baseball cap absorbs sweat and sunscreen.
A baseball cap sits between you and the world. It protects you from dust and rain, and during a long day, a baseball cap absorbs sweat and sunscreen.
The good news is that you can clean your baseball cap with things you probably already have around the house.
What you'll need
An old soft toothbrush or nail brush: This will come in handy to scrub any stubborn stains.
A cleaner with enzyme cleaner or detergent.
A stain remover for major stains: detergents can't handle all stains. Have a more effective stain remover on hand in case you need to pull out the big guns.
Bucket or sink: It's okay to wash your hat in the sink, but be sure to wipe it down first. You can also use a bucket or storage bag.
Dry the lid with something round: a melon, a coffee can or a rolled up towel will work.

Plan on 20 to 30 minutes, plus drying time.
Rinse the baseball cap
Start by rinsing your baseball cap with water a few times. Many of the things that make your cap clump may be light surface sticky substances that will come off immediately after a good rinse.
Field Cleaning
If you use detergent, lather a small amount in water. If you use laundry detergent, dissolve a small amount in a container of water.
Apply the soap mixture to a toothbrush or nail brush and scrub any visible marks and stains. Use small circular motions (such as when brushing your teeth) to really remove any deep stains.

Fill the basin or sink with soapy water using detergent or dishwashing liquid. Soak the entire hat in the basin for about 10 minutes, then shake it slightly to hand wash it.
If your hat is particularly rough, you may need to change the water (this is not something I know from experience). Rinse the cap 2 to 3 times under running water until the water runs clear.

If you just let your cap dry by shaking it on the floor, it will end up crumpled and looking weird. Fill the body of the cap with something to dry it into roughly the right shape - you can use a coffee can, a bundled towel, a melon, or anything. If you still have stains on your hat, you can use a stain remover.
Dissolve a scoop of powder in a pint of water to make a powerful cleaning mixture. Then field test the mixture on an inconspicuous area of the cap to make sure it won't cause any damage. If everything looks good, apply the mixture directly to the stubborn stain. Let it sit on the fabric for five minutes, then rinse the cap thoroughly.
Do not clean your hats in the washing machine, even if you technically can. At best, these are aggressive, harsh cleaning methods that go beyond what the cap needs. At worst, you end up with a monstrous hat.
Some baseball caps don't fit the type of cleaning we're discussing here. They usually have soft brims, may deteriorate when soaked, and may dry in the wrong shape. For these types of hats, dry cleaning is the best option (or a very gentle spot clean that vacuums up any liquids).
