Sprung vs Unsprung Multipoint Door Handles

When purchasing door handles for your external or patio doors, you may be asked whether you require a sprung multipoint door handle or an unsprung multipoint door handle. To make sure you specify the correct handle for your application, it’s important to understand the difference between these two styles.

What is a Multipoint Door Handle?

Multipoint handles are typically used on uPVC external doors such as front doors and patio doors. Simply lift the handle to engage the three points of locking at the top, middle and bottom of the door – allowing for enhanced security.

Sprung VS Unsprung Multipoint Door Handles

A sprung multipoint handle includes a spring cassette in the rear of the handle which has enough tension to return the handle to its original position after use. This type of handle is often installed with a low-quality locking system.

Unsprung multipoint door handles are designed without a spring and therefore must be installed with a heavy-duty lock to prevent dropping handles.

The only small visible difference between both handles is the thickness of the backplate.
