Disposable Gloves

All the above material types in this gloves overview are available as disposable gloves, which are designed to suit different needs. However, these can generally be divided into 2 types:

  • General purpose gloves.
  • Medical grade gloves.

The main advantage of disposable gloves is that they encourage single use. All the above glove types are not breathable. Therefore, a fungus and bacterial friendly environment builds up inside the glove. Discarding a glove that has been worn once instantly gets rid of this issue.

Disposable gloves are designed to be thin so that they can provide protection and hygiene. Whilst giving a high degree of touch and ease of movement.

Acceptance Quality Level

Glove Manufacturers require to print the Acceptance Quality Level (AQL) on each box of gloves they produce. The AQL is a quality standard that is used internationally to measure the percentage of pinhole defects in batches of disposable gloves.

This is achieved by testing a pre-defined number of gloves from a production batch. The gloves are tested by filling them with 1000ml of water and observing them for a specified time period. The test is passed when no water leaks from the glove. This proves that it has no holes.

An AQL rating of 1.5 indicates that less than 1.5% of the gloves in a batch had defects. Whereas , an AQL rating of 0.65 indicates that a stricter quality control process was carried out and less than 0.65% of the gloves in a batch have defects. An AQL rating of 4.0 shows that a less stringent quality control process was carried out and less than 4.0% of the gloves in a batch have defects.

The lower the AQL rating means less defects are found in the batch of gloves tested. E.g. a set of gloves with an AQL of 1.5 would be more rigorously tested than an AQL of 4.0.Therefore, the glove wearer has more personal protection with a lower AQL rating.

The most common AQL ratings for gloves in the UK are:

  • 0.65 and 1.0 which are used in microbiology laboratories, chemotherapy clinics and surgery.
  • 1.5 which are used in the medical industry.
  • 4.0 which are used for industrial and domestic purposes.
