Work and Possible Failure of Floating Seal

Floating seals are an important part of the driving motor or final transmission. It rests against the hub and maintains the gear oil on the planetary side to prevent contaminants from entering places that may damage bearings and gears. If this seal starts to leak, your driving motor will be damaged. In this blog, we will discuss five things you should know about floating end seals.

Working principle of floating seal

Floating seals have several different names, including double cone seal, double cone seal, compound surface ring, mechanical face seal or main seal. The floating seal assembly consists of two matching halves, and the elastic ring presses the two seals together to provide the seal.

Floating seals are not indestructible

Floating face seals are designed to survive some of the most extreme conditions encountered by construction and earthmoving equipment. Keep in mind, however, that floating face seals have a limited service life and should be replaced during the service life of the equipment. Use hoses or high-pressure cleaners to carefully remove debris around the face seal to prolong service life.

What happens when a floating seal fails?

The leakage behind the sprocket means that the floating surface seal can no longer be tightly sealed. Not only will the gear oil leak, damaging and corroding the planetary side of the final transmission, but the abrasive material can now enter the interior of the final transmission.
All mud, sand, concrete, mud, dirt, cement, dust, mud and other debris accumulated around the landing gear and final drive can now come into contact with precision gears and bearings in the walking motor. These pollutants are mixed with gear oil to form sticky and usually foul-smelling sludge. This sludge works the opposite of lubrication-allowing overheating, wear, erosion, scars, scratches, gouges, and metal to come into contact with metal until your final drive no longer works.

What is the cause of failure?

We have discussed the fact that the service life of floating face seals is limited. One reason for the failure is that the seal has exceeded the rated number of hours and a new seal needs to be replaced.
Another more common reason is that the seal shifts due to contact with contaminants-or, in other words, too much debris accumulates on and around the face seal, causing the seal to shift. This process begins with the damage to the o-ring until it is weakened to the extent that the sealing surface is no longer pressed tightly together. The o-ring shown here has been damaged to such an extent that it appears to have been torn apart. This is obviously not good. Once this happens, the debris will enter between the sealing surfaces, where the situation will become worse.

How to keep it sealed

To prevent the floating seal from failing prematurely, use a high-pressure cleaner to clean the chassis of the machine. This simple maintenance step can save you thousands of dollars in maintenance costs. If you seem to have to fill up the gear oil often, or if you notice that the gear oil is leaking behind the sprocket, this means that there is something wrong with your seals and it is time to replace them. The sooner you deal with such leaks, the more money you will save.

A failed primary seal may damage the final drive beyond repair, and this can happen soon. Keep in mind that floating seals do not mean to last forever, but they can extend their life as long as possible through proper maintenance. When you need help, please contact KINGSEAL, our main products are O-rings, oil seals, hydraulic seals, gaskets, floating seals and OEM rubber parts. They are widely used in machinery, automobiles, mining, engineering construction, food, game equipment and other industries.
