Viewing a thread - Closing exhaust when hauling equipment?

Alberta Canada
I was told it was a fable that a turbo could get wrecked with not closing up the exhaust pipe. Usually I tried to make it a habit of doing it but kinda got lazy when hauling my own equipment. Unloaded a skidder this week with the 8.1deere engine and the turbo immediately crapped out. Guess I’m a believer now.

Forgot never caused a turbo to go out here either...Have lost two in recent years, one to squirrels using the backhoe in cold weather, starting-stopping, the other was open exhaust during winter...The only turbo failures I can remember, and we have several that have never failed...Mechanics taught me to cover during hauling, so long distance I was sure to obey, but never had one to lock up after hauling...Both here locked up during use of the engine...Several years of hauling a winch tractor to jobs on different mornings never failed.

You will not wreck the turbo from air blowing down the pipe as long as it is attached to an engine, that stops any meaningful air flow as near nothing goes through a stopped engine, even at valve overlap where the two valves in one cylinder are open a tiny fraction of an inch..
Covering the exhaust WILL keep road trash / water/ dirt out of the turbo and engine. Years ago I remember driving through the pea rock paved back parking lot at a truck stop. A truck with loaded wheel loader was parked there. The loader had one of those 45 degree bend, slash cut exhaust pipes that are so popular now. As we drove by, I noticed a kid trying to "make a basket" in that open exhaust pipe with pea rock. If he got one or more granite pea rock down in the turbo, it may make a pretty spectacular failure.
