“Styrofoam” is usually the first word that comes to mind when thinking of foam but Styrofoam is a trademarked term for extruded polystyrene foam (XPS) manufactured for craft projects and thermal insulation. Expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) is not Styrofoam but a closed cell and rigid foam designed for use in non-weight bearing architectural and art ventures alike. The closed cell nature of EPS foam provides minimal water absorption and vapor permanence.

Pre-Puff Polystyrene Beads.

EPS foam is created in a two-step process. Pre-puff polystyrene beads are created by steaming raw polystyrene beads which are then cured in large bags. Once cured, the pre-puff beads are then placed in a block mold and steamed for a second time producing the raw EPS foam. After the molding process has ended, the newly crafted EPS foam blocks are then moved to a storage room where they are allowed to age for the appropriate amount of time.

The benefits of using EPS foam are vast and numerous. EPS foam is mold and moisture resistant which means it will not decay over time like other building materials; it provides constant thermal resistance making it an energy-efficient choice for insulation. Long-term resistance to heat makes EPS foam an ideal architectural material for warmer weather climates.

Coffered Ceiling Material, Precision Cut on Our Foam Hot Wire Machine.

Once we receive the aged and cured block-molded EPS foam, know as a billet, we are ready to start creating. Whether making crown moldings for a property remodel or a hand-carved artistic medallion, we have the tools on hand to get the job done. Our computer-controlled hot wire machine makes precise cuts and angles on moldings, trims, window sills, and more. We also have computer-controlled CNC machines which allow us to create custom three-dimensional objects such as decorative medallions and artistic sculptures.
