Leaf systems are available in both horizontal and vertical styles that can be used with both wet and dry cake discharge. Pressure leaf filters are offered with a variety of filter meshes to meet the needs of a range of fluid applications including edible oils, gelatin, liquid sulfur, and bio-diesel.
Pressure leaf filters work by feeding a liquid (dirty influent) into a pressure vessel under pressure. The liquid passes through filter leaves leaving behind the solids in the form of a cake. The filtered liquid (filtrate, or clean effluent) exits the filter through the manifold connecting all the filter leaves. The filter cake is then discharged from the vessel either by sluicing with a separate liquid or as a dry solid via vibration.
● Cake Discharge Methods
Depending on how the solids need to be handled or the nature of the solids, the filter cake can either be discharged as a dry solid or as wet cake slurry.
● Dry Cake Discharge
To discharge the cake as a solid, a vibrating mechanism is used to shake the filter cake off of the leaves. In order for the cake to leave the vessel the shell must be retracted. A Quick Open Closure (QOC) is often used to make shell retraction safe and fast. Once the shell is open the cake is vibrated into a hopper for recovery or disposal.
● Wet Cake Discharge
When the solids are hazardous or easily disposed of in liquid form, the filter cake can be washed from the leaves and discharged. The sluicing system efficiently washes the cake from the leaves using nozzles on a rotating header.
● Semi-Automatic Pressure Leaf Filters
These filters feature a central control panel for sequence step activation. The various pump drives, agitator drives and valves are automatically activated to the required mode for the process step.
● Fully Automated Pressure Leaf Filters
These filters feature either touch-screen programmers or programmable controllers, which are used to ensure that each process step is activated automatically. Flow rate and turbidity may, if required, be monitored. Various options are available such as main panel graphics, manual overrides, alarms, remote terminal boxes, station wiring and completely piped and wired skid-mounted systems.
Filter Motor (PDF): Either an electric or a hydraulic drive can be specified in your design. The electric motor is driven by a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD). The VFD gives precise speed control of the nest rotation and offers programmable ramping speed control. High speed rotation is needed for cake discharge while low speeds aid the effectiveness of boil-outs and filter plate washing.
Upper Bearing (PDF): The upper bearing is installed above and separated from the upper seal. This arrangement protects the bearing from damage in the event there is a seal leak. The upper bearing uses two bearings working in tandem to allow smooth rotation of the filter shaft. There is a radial bearing for the lateral forces and an axial bearing that handles the thrust load of the weight of the filter nest.
Upper Seal (PDF): Designed to eliminate causes of failure, a key feature of the upper seal is the corrosion resistant bearing sleeve. The filter shaft fits inside of the bearing sleeve, riding on the sleeve instead of the shaft.
Filter Nest (PDF): The filter nest consists of a central manifold and the leaves of the filter. The leaves are typically constructed of stainless steel and outfitted with a sintered mesh or cloth fabric that provides the basis for filtration.
Pressure leaf filters are designed for final discharge of solids in either a dry or wet state, under totally enclosed conditions, with fully automatic operation.
Each type of pressure leaf filter features a pressure vessel in which are located one or more filter elements or leaves of circular or rectangular construction. The filter media may be in the form of a synthetic fibre or other fabrics, or metallic mesh. Supports and intermediate drainage members are in coarse mesh with all components held together by edge binding. Leaf outlets are connected individually to an outlet manifold which passes through the wall of the pressure vessel.
The material to be filtered is fed into the vessel under pressure, and separation takes place with the solids being deposited on the leaf surface, and the liquid passing through the drainage system and out of the filter. Cycle times are determined by pressure, cake capacity or batch quantity. Where particularly fine solids must be removed, a layer of precoat material may be deposited on the leaves prior to filtration, using diatomaceous earth, perlite, or other suitable precoat materials.
Cake washing, for recovery of mother liquor or for removal of solubles, may be carried out before discharge of the solids as a slurry or a dry cake.
Pressure leaf filters are supplied in a wide range of size and materials of construction. For sluice cleaning either a stationary or oscillating jet system using high efficiency spray nozzles is fitted so as to give complete cake removal. For recovery of dry solids, vibration of the leaves allows automatic discharge of the solids through a bottom discharge port provided with a quick opening door.
