How Does A Rapid Mixer Granulator Work?

A rapid mixer-granulator is used in the pharmaceutical industry to mix drug ingredients and make granules. It is part of the wet granulation process prior to compression and capsule filling. It is also known as a high shear mixer.


Different parts of RMG

RMG has different parts such as impeller, chopper, discharge, pneumatic system and control panel etc.


Impeller.

There are two half-length blades and two full-length blades fixed to the impeller at the bottom of the dome-shaped stainless steel bowl. The impeller is designed in such a way that the full-length blades push the material and the half-length blades lift the material. The impeller helps to break down the wet material into smaller pieces and particles.


Chopper.

The chopper has very sharp small blades specifically designed to cut the wet chunks of material into very small portions which are then mixed by the impeller. It is located at the bottom of the dome and the size of the pellets depends entirely on the speed of the chopper. The chopper blade rotates at a high speed of 1500 to 3000 RPM.


Unloading port.

The discharge port is used to unload the container filled with pellets. It is located at the bottom of the dome and the opening of the discharge port is operated by a pneumatic cylinder (a compressed air regulating cylinder).


Pneumatic system.

This system is used to operate the chopper driven and impeller driven discharge valve air purge to avoid cross contamination. The system also contains air filter pressure gauges and other piping and pneumatic accessories.


Control Panel.

The control panel is mounted on the platform and has on/off, fast, slow and automatic/manual controls. There are timers, indicators, discharge on/off control, motor ammeter/voltmeter, air regulator and pressure gauge, air filter and PLC control panel (optional).



Principle of operation.

After loading the ingredients into the RMG, the particles are formed through an impeller which sets the entire mixture into a rotating tumbling motion, resulting in the distribution of all dry and wet particles.

The agglomerates formed during the wet mixing process are broken up by the chopper, and both the impeller and chopper operate at low speed during the addition of the binder solution.

After the wet masses are formed, the impeller and chopper run at high speed to obtain the desired size of particles.

The wet particles can then be discharged through the impeller through an outlet located on the side of the mixing bowl, flush with the bottom.
