Coil Coating (Painting)

What is it?

Coil coating (painting the steel) is a process that paints the materials before being turned into end products. The metal coil is positioned at the beginning of the coating line, and in one continuous process, the coil is unwound, cleaned, treated, primed, and painted before being recoiled on the other end and packaged for shipment. These are the common steps that take place on a modern coating line:

  1. Coils/strips are attached to make a continuous coil.
  2. The strip is cleaned, power-brushed and pre-treated with chemicals
  3. The steel is dried to ensure adhesion of the primer
  4. Primer is applied to one or both sides of the strip
  5. The steel is cured (often for no more than a minute), then cooled
  6. The top coating is applied, followed by a second curing process
  7. The pre-coated coil is cooled down to room temperature, and rewound to form a coil of the processed material.
