Silverton residents soon will enjoy new streetlights that are more sustainable, cost-effective and provide better visibility for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists.

The Silverton City Council opted to replace the city’s aging streetlights with newer, more energy efficient lights at the Jan. 6 meeting.

Portland General Electric will be converting cobra head high-pressure sodium street lights to light-emitting diode (LED) street lights.

The city will sell 256 light poles to PGE for about $179,000. The money can be used to offset street lighting costs or provide for street-lighting infill projects.

PGE plans to replace the older sodium gas lights with LED technology. The city estimates the move will save $3,900 in maintenance costs annually.

The council decided to take a one-time payout and declined an option that would have sold the light poles to PGE over time.

Councilor Scott Walker said he was concerned by taking a lump sum payout because the city would not be as careful spending the money. The longer payout period would be a wise decision, Walker said.

According to PGE, new LED street lights offer several advantages.

Compared to the traditional orange/yellow light, LED streetlights provide a white directional light, creating more uniformity.

The LED lights chosen by PGE will “reduce light pollution” by focusing light where it is needed, allowing people to see stars and planets more clearly.

In the long run, the city will save on energy costs because LEDs use 60 to 70 percent less energy and last more than four times longer than typical neighborhood streetlights.
