When you think of Easter decor, you most likely think of pastel colors, speckled eggs, delightful spring wreaths, and wicker baskets. And of course, we must not forget the real star of the show: the Easter bunny! Give me all the bunny figurines—chocolate or porcelain. This year, the Easter decor scene has been invaded by some new (and very short) characters. Hello gnomes, we meet again.
You may recall having seen these small bearded men popping up during Christmas. Since then, they've traded in their red and green attire for some softer shades, and some have even acquired their own bunny ears. As retailers like Amazon, as well as individual sellers on Etsy, start to sell "Easter gnomes,'' the trend is making its way onto Instagram. They’re literally tearing through traditional Easter decor with their pointy cone hats!
These figures originally came to us from Scandinavia. Legend has it that during the late 18th and 19th centuries, gnomes or “nisse” as they were often called, would watch over a family's home and perform various tasks there. They became closely associated with elves, for their similar duties and stature, which is how they became so popular during Christmas. They are believed to bring good luck and prosperity to a household, which might explain their return. Not to mention, their Christmas popularity may have influenced manufacturers to crank out an Easter edition, as I'm not seeing gnomes with bunny ears, or dressed as chicks (see below) ever cited in Scandinavian folklore.
