No other rug can create an authentic rustic, country home atmosphere as well as braided area rags can. Braided rugs are made by plaiting or coiling strands of material into braids. The braids are then laced or stitched together, to form a rug.

Due to this particular construction method, most braided rugs have the advantage of both their sides being usable. While it doesn't exactly double rug's life, being able to use both sides is practical in more than one way.  Originally made by hand, often from scrap materials, braided area rugs nowadays are professionally made both, by hand or machine, and have their steady share of the market.

Braiding can be done in various ways, and with many materials, from wool fabric or yarn to synthetics. The braid is usually tubular, but can also come in a tape, or flat form. Braided rugs usually have oval shape, and  their size is usually medium to small. However,  other shapes and sizes can be found as well. While actual rug properties will mostly depend on the materials used, as well as braid thickness and form, braided rugs are generally considered durable and easy to maintain, thus suitable for high-traffic areas.

The thicker braid, the more durable rug. Tubular braids are preferable in this respect to the flat or tape form. Of course, fiber quality and properties also matter - branded nylon or wool are, as usual, best choices.
