So I bought a new bar face soap from a local company. I didn't look at the ingredients but I assumed it would be natural since I've bought an olive oil hand soap from them that I absolutely love. I looked at the ingredients last night (after washing my face with it) and they are: distilled water, coconut milk, sodium hydroxide, palm oil, palm kernel oil, olive oil, evening primrose oil, jojoba oil, rose clay and fragrance oil. I looked up sodium hydroxide and found that it is used in a lot of products such as face cleansers and lotions, tooth paste, deodorant, paper, industrial cleaning agents, etc. It also said that it can be really damaging to the skin. Basically everything I've read on it has been pretty negative.. but it's used in tons of products! So I was wondering, is it only damaging to the skin if you accidentally get pure sodium hydroxide on yourself? Or can it also be damaging in small amounts? I noticed while I was using it, my face felt really slimy, then after I dried my face, it was tight and dry feeling. I then looked at all the other products I use and none of them have sodium hydroxide in them. Could someone shed some light on this? Is this face wash okay to use?
