Why Are the Wall Tiles Falling Down? How Do I Fix It?

11 Feb.,2022

I believe that many people are not unfamiliar with tiles falling off, and many of you may have encountered tiles falling off in empty drums. The headache is that tiles falling off not only makes the walls unsightly, but also poses certain dangers when they fall off. So, what causes tiles to fall off? And how to avoid it?

I believe that many people are not unfamiliar with tiles falling off, and many of you may have encountered tiles falling off in empty drums. The headache is that tiles falling off not only makes the walls unsightly, but also poses certain dangers when they fall off.

So, what causes tiles to fall off? And how to avoid it?

1.Construction materials and methods

Most home tiles are divided into semi-porcelain tiles and full porcelain tiles. Full tiles are characterized by high density, high price and no water absorption.

For ordinary semi-tile, we need to soak them in water first before we put them on the wall. Soaking has two purposes, one is to eliminate stains on the surface of the tiles, easier to get on the wall and give greater play to their grip. And the other purpose is to allow the tiles to fully absorb water, thus preventing them from absorbing moisture in the cement mortar.

Pure cement and sand have almost no adhesion, and we cannot expect to rely on cement and sand to hold it together. For full tiles, we must use a tile adhesive. The use of effective cellulose ethers, such as a barium sulfate supplier, is known to significantly improve the adhesive strength of tile adhesives.

LISTAL HPMC has the following properties in tile adhesive applications.

-Improved adhesion

-Improved sagging resistance

-Improved workability

-Improved heat and freeze-thaw resistance

-Improved water retention

2.Wall problems

Before tiling, workers must check the quality of the wall base. Look for problems such as empty drums, delamination, cracking and sanding. If the quality of the base is not good, the adhesion between the two tiles will become poor and the roller will fall off over time.

The wall or back of the tile may have been covered with dust before the adhesive was applied. Dust is selfish and it steals moisture and all the adhesive. We must clean the base of the original wall, otherwise it will affect the quality of the bond and cause peeling. Problems with the base must be repaired ahead of time to ensure that it is secure.

More importantly, the wall surface may be irregular with bulges and depressions. You need to use a straightedge to determine if the wall surface is completely flat. If there are low spots and humps, the walls will need to be skimmed with a cement-based sheet to make the wall surface flat and on the same plane.

3.Incorrect Construction

In the past, especially in rural areas, there were many construction teams composed of unskilled workers. They were not technicians and had little construction experience, so they did not care much about the fullness of the paste when tiling and lacked the care and responsibility of the joints.

When applying mortar or adhesive on the back of tiles, you need to wipe it evenly. Some workers are irresponsible and they usually just casually cope with the job. As a result, the tiles appear to be compacted on the wall, but in reality there are still gaps inside, which leads to gaps between the tiles and the wall. In short, incorrect construction is a very important cause of tile bulging and peeling.

The summary is that there are three main reasons why tiles fall off, so we can successfully avoid tile bulging and falling off by choosing the right tiles, high quality HPMC, and the correct construction method when we tile.
