NPK: The star plant nutrients

Plant health and strength depend on a few key factors, like the soil health, atmospheric conditions, availability of nutrients etc. Each field, each plant, each seed needs nutrients to grow.  None however is as important as the role played by the three vital nutrients for almost any plant for its health and growth: Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K). These are the three most important nutrients for any plant if used in the right proportions as per the requirement of the crop.

 
Without the right amount of Nutrients in its right proportion, the seeds or plants will fail. In a country like India, where cost is always a factor for the farmers, and the atmospheric conditions are not alway very conducive, it is very important for the grower/farmer to know the nutrient requirements of the crop in order to have a good yield at the optimum cost. For example, if you are growing leafy vegetables, you may want to apply a fertilizer that has a higher nitrogen number to encourage leaf growth. If you are growing flowers, you may want to apply a fertilizer that has a higher phosphorus number to encourage more blooms.

Before you apply fertilizer to your farm/garden etc, , you should have your soil tested. This will also help you determine what balance of fertilizer numbers will be appropriate for your garden’s soil needs and deficiencies.

Why NPK? 

NPK are essentially the building blocks of almost all fertilizer types. You might have noticed that almost all packagings of fertilizers have NPK written on them and some numbers corresponding to the same. What these numbers denote is the ratio of the particular nutrient present in the fertilizer. For example,  When you pick up any of the NPK fertilizer, the ratio will be displayed on the packaging in a series of three numbers, such as 10-26-26. These numbers correspond to the ‘N’, ‘P’, and ‘K’ ratio of the fertilizer.  In this case, the example fertilizer would have 10% nitrogen, 26% phosphorus, and 26% potassium.

Nitrogen(N), promotes healthy growth of leaves. Nitrogen is largely composed of chlorophyll, which allows plants to absorb sunlight and turn it into useful energy. Nitrogen is additionally a noteworthy segment in amino acids, the premise of proteins.

Because potassium improves the overall health of growing plants and helps them fight against disease, it is known as the “quality” nutrient. Potassium affects quality factors such as size, shape, colour and vigour of the seed or grain, and improves the fibre quality of cotton.

The essential inorganic source of potassium for use in NPK fertilisers is potash. Like phosphate shake, potash is mined everywhere throughout the world and handled into a more refined item. Potassium can likewise originate from potassium sulphate, langbeinite, and stone clean.
