What To Consider in Spot Lights

These are BR, MR, and PAR. You notice that a two-digit number usually follows the name type. The number indicates the bulb's diameter (in 1/8ths of an inch). For instance:

 

MR16 - Are the smallest type. They have a diameter of 2 inches. They are commonly used where lower brightness is required. MR16s are typically 5 – 8 watts.

PAR20 – These bulbs have a 2.5-inch diameter. They are best suited for residential applications (lower ceiling applications). They are usually 13 watts. 

PAR30 – Similar to PAR 20 in shape and function. The main difference is that PAR30 has a slightly wider diameter of 3.75 inches and is commonly known for higher ceiling applications. They are usually 15 watts. 

PAR 38 – PAR38 are the largest of the commonly used residential spotlights. They are usually 18-watt bulbs with a diameter of 4.13 inches.

Color: CCT and CRI

Unlike halogen spotlights, LED spotlights offer many CRI and color temperature options. As a result, consumers find an easy time settling for the right one. Color temperature helps describe how "blue" or "yellow" a color of light appears. The available color temperature ranges from 2700K, which is more yellow, to a bluish 5000K. Even though lighting a home is a personal choice, a 3000K LED spotlight is highly recommended for home and garden usage and 5000K is recommended for large areas and sports lighting. You can either go up or down depending on whether you think it is too blue or too yellow.

Typically, an LED spotlight with a CRI of around 80 is sufficient. However, one with a CRI of more than 90 is preferred for enhanced appearance.  


Power and Brightness

Many people use watts as a basis to determine the brightness of a light bulb. Many people conclude that a 60-watt bulb is brighter than a 40-watt one, which is correct, at least with most halogen bulbs. People tend to forget that a watt is not necessarily a measure of total light output but electrical energy (input), especially with LED spotlights.
